Coal seismic diffraction fault imaging: Results from numerical modelling

چکیده
Modern underground coal mining requires certainty about geological faults and other structural features for safety reasons. Even a fault with a throw of a few metres can create safety issues and lead to costly delays in mine production. To ensure there are no unwelcome surprises concerning seam conditions during mining, seismic reflection surveys have been widely used by Australian coal mines, due to their unprecedented ability to detect geological structures. While locating faults with throws greater than 5-10 m can be done using seismic surveys, the ability to resolve the more subtle faults, shears and features that exploration programs should also locate is still a challenge in the coal mining industry (Zhou and Hatherly, 2012).

The Application of Seismic Attribute Analysis Technique in Coal Field Exploration*
Minor faults, subsidence columns, coal tunnels and gob are very important in coal mining because they can cause flooding accidents, broken coal beds, added fissures, and gas accumulation. All of these factors will increase coal mining risk. In addition, minor faults also affect the design of roadways. In this article, we have achieved satisfactory results in identifying minor faults, subsidence...

Conventional seismic imaging possesses problem in exposing structural detail in complex geological media. Nevertheless, some recently introduced methods reduce this ambiguity to some extent, by using data based imaging operator or emancipation from the macro-velocity model. The zero offset common reflection surface (ZO-CRS) stack method is a velocity independent imaging technique which is frequ...
متن کاملModeling of Fault Co-seismic Displacement Fields in Elastic Environments Based on Spherical Dislocation Theory
This research is based on the modeling of co-seismic deformations due to the fault movement in the elastic environments, and we can obtain the deformations generated in the faults. Here, modeling of the co-seismic displacement field is based on the analytical method with two spherical dislocation model and half-space dislocation model. The difference in displacement field from two spherical and...

S U M M A R Y The presence of fault-plane reflections in seismic images, besides indicating the locations of faults, offers a possible source of information on the properties of these poorly understood zones. To better understand the physical mechanism giving rise to fault-plane reflections in compacting sedimentary basins, we numerically model the full elastic wavefield via the spectral elemen...

Numerical modelling techniques are not new for mining industry and civil engineering projects anymore. These techniques have been widely used for rock engineering problems such as stability analysis and support design of roadways and tunnels, caving and subsidence prediction, and stability analysis of rock slopes. Despite the significant advancement in the computational mechanics and availabili...
